Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes very densely imbricate building up thallus into a thick mat, flat, not ascending at apices, sublinear-elongate, not constricted, subdichotomously branched, 0.5–1 (–1.5) mm wide; margins becoming densely short-laciniate at thallus centre; laciniae 0.5–1 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins blackened especially towards apices. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, jet black, brown-black near lobe apices; rhizines very sparse, simple, very short and robust, black. Apothecia subpedicellate, to 7 mm wide; disc deeply concave, reddish brown; thalline exciple persistent. Ascospores 10–11 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then deep red, C-, KC-, P+ orange-red; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and consalazinic acid. | ||
Scattered on rock in open areas throughout southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on the South Is. of New Zealand. | ||
