| Thallus subcrustose, very tightly adnate, ±rosette forming, to 3–5 cm wide. Lobes not imbricate, widely separate or rarely contiguous, sublinear, subdichotomously branched, 0.5–0.8 (–1) mm wide; apices markedly incised. Upper surface pale yellow-green, darkening to yellow-brown or black in thallus centre, flat to slightly concave, shiny at apices, dull and irregularly cracked near thallus centre, becoming crustose-areolate; isidia sparse, inflated-globose, simple; isidia apices epicorticate and becoming erumpent, barely sorediate, ultimately eroding leaving crater-like cavities. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, smooth, shiny, black, rarely partly dark-brown; rhizines sparse, simple, concolorous. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid, norstictic acid (minor), cryptostictic acid (trace) and ±menegazziaic acid (trace). | ||
| Scattered on rock, mainly in coastal ranges of southern and northern Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait)); also in South Africa and South America. | ||
