| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to c. 6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, irregular, irregularly branched, 2–5 (–8) mm wide; margins crenate or, in places, lobulate; lobules simple, flat, 0.2–1 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, broadly undulating, shiny, soon appearing pruinose or subgranulate, emaculate, smooth, without areolae; lobe margins often black; isidia dense, coarse, short, globose; isidia apices epicorticate, erumpent and becoming pustulate, barely sorediate. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to black-brown, darker towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 1–3 mm wide; disc convex becoming ±flat, dark brown to black-brown; thalline exciple entire, persistent, pustulate-isidiate. Ascospores 8–9 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and consalazinic acid. | ||
| Essentially alpine-subalpine, common on exposed rock in alpine and subalpine zones of south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on both islands of New Zealand and in South America. | ||
