| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 7–10 cm wide. Lobes contiguous to imbricate, irregular, irregularly branched, 1.5–2.5 (–3) mm wide; laciniae subascending at apices or imbricate, sometimes building up thallus into a thick mat, sublinear-elongate, subdichotomously branched, 0.7–1.5 mm wide; apices of marginal lobes subrotund. Upper surface yellow-green to olive-green, darkening with age, generally flat, marginal lobes sometimes shiny, becoming dull and rugose at thallus centre, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins often black. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, pale ivory to pale brown; rhizines sparse, often grouped subapically, simple, pale to dark brown. Apothecia sessile, to 10 mm wide; disc deeply concave, becoming flattened and distorted, pale brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, involute, crenulate, becoming deeply lacerate. Ascospores 8–9 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–8 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid, ±salazinic acid, ±constipatic acid and ±protoconstipatic acid. |  |

| Common, on rock in lowland, mountain and subalpine habitats in more temperate areas of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.), more rarely in arid montane areas; also on the South Is. of New Zealand. | ||
