Thallus subcrustose, tightly adnate, to 2–4 (–7) cm wide. Lobes congested, subirregular to sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, without laciniae. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening with age, flat or convex, dull, emaculate, commonly becoming areolate towards thallus centre, without soredia; isidia cylindrical, simple or commonly branched, to 0.3 mm high; isidia apices syncorticate and often dark or blackened. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, yellow-brown to dark brown; rhizines sparse, concolorous. Apothecia rare, sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave then ±flat, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, entire then crenate. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–5.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-; containing usnic acid and norlobaridone. | ||
Apparently rare but possibly overlooked, usually found on rocky upland areas with moderate rainfall in southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.). There have been several collections from more arid areas. Also occurs on the South Is. of New Zealand (central Otago). Grows on rock. | ||
