Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 2–8 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, sublinear-elongate to irregular, irregularly branched, 1–2 (–5) mm wide; apices rounded or shallowly notched. Upper surface yellow-green, blackening with age, smooth at margins, shiny, emaculate; older lobes becoming rugulose and transversely or irregularly cracked but not areolate; lobe margins ±blackened; isidia in thallus centre, simple, globose; isidia apices epicorticate, becoming inflated and ±erumpent but not sorediose. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, pale brown to brown, darker at lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, short, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, c. 1 mm wide (immature); disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple isidiate. No mature ascospores observed. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ intense yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid, connorstictic acid, ±hypostictic acid (trace) and ±hypoconstictic acid (trace). | ||
Scattered on rock in subarid and arid areas of inland W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic.; also on the South Is. of New Zealand (Marlborough). | ||
