Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes loosely imbricate, flat, linear-elongate, divaricate, with subirregular dichotomous branching, to 8 mm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; margins often subascending at apices exposing lower surface. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny or dull, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins shiny, black or brown. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny or matt, rugose, pale brown to chocolate-brown, to almost black near apices; rhizines very sparse, simple, robust, concolorous. Apothecia subpedicellate, to 5 mm wide; disc concave, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, involute, crenulate, incised. Ascospores 6–8 × 4.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-; containing usnic acid, loxodin, norlobaridone, rarely conorlobaridone (trace) and rarely norlobariol methyl ester (trace). | ||
Common. Scattered on dry, well drained rock surfaces throughout southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on the North Is. of New Zealand (Central Auckland). | ||
