| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, flat, subirregular, elongate, irregularly constricted, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; laciniae numerous, developing in the thallus centre, subdichotomously branched, 0.4–1 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, becoming greyish, shiny, occasionally dull in places, emaculate, ±smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; laciniae with distinct black margins. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, black, with a broad brown-black to brown zone near lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple or dichotomously branched, concolorous. Apothecia common, sessile to subpedicellate, 2–6 mm wide; disc concave, cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple thin, strongly involute, becoming crenulate and lacerate. Ascospores 10–12 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid and salazinic acid (minor). | ||
| Relatively common, in upland or subalpine habitats of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on Macquarie Is. and both islands of New Zealand. Grows on rock and pebbles, very rarely spreads onto soil. | ||
