Xanthoparmelia inconspicuella Elix
     
  Mycotaxon 87: 399 (2003); Paraparmelia inconspicua Elix, Mycotaxon 59: 411 (1996). T: Western Australia. Slopes of Angwin Peak, Porongurups Range, Porongurups National Park, 19 km ESE of Mt Barker, 34°40'S, 117°51'E, 360 m, on granite rocks, J. A. Elix 41347, H. T. Lumbsch & H. Streimann, 17 Sept. 1994; holo: CANB.  
     
  Thallus  small-foliose, moderately to loosely adnate, saxicolous, forming irregular rosettes to 2 cm wide.  Lobes imbricate, irregular to sublinear, irregularly to subdichotomously branched, 0.2-1.0 mm wide.  Upper surface pale ash-grey, black-marginate towards the lobe apices, flat, smooth and shiny at the tips, becoming dull and blackening in the thallus centre, isidiate; isidia sparse to dense, globose then short cylindrical, simple or very rarely branched; isidia apices syncorticate, intact.  Medulla white.  Lower surface black, brown at the apices; rhizines sparse, robust, simple or tufted, black.  Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, to 2 mm wide; disc shallowly concave to ±flat, mid-brown; thalline exciple thin, isidiate.  Ascospores ellipsoid, 7-11 x 3.5-5.5 µm.  Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K+ yellow, medulla K+ yellow becoming red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor/trace).
