| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 6–8 cm wide. Lobes variable, moderately to sparingly imbricate, flat, irregular to linear-elongate, irregularly branched, 2–3 (–5) mm wide; occasionally developing narrower (0.8–1.5 mm) subdichotomously branched laciniae; apices crenulate, ±round. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening, slightly shiny or dull, emaculate, becoming rugose and cracked, lacking isidia and soredia; lobe margins usually blackening. Medulla white. Lower surface pale ivory to tan, darker towards lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple or very rarely sparingly branched, concolorous. Apothecia scattered, sessile, to 8 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thick and involute, becoming thin, persistent. Ascospores 8–9 × 5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ pale brown, C-, P+ orange-red; containing usnic acid, fumarprotocetraric acid, succinprotocetraric acid and ±protocetraric acid (trace). | ||
