  Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 6–10 (–12) cm wide. Lobes sparingly imbricate, subirregular, irregularly branched, 0.7–2.5 (–3.5) mm wide; marginal lobes flat, subrotund at apices; lobules occasionally developing in thallus centre. Upper surface pale yellow-green, darkening to olive-green or blackish, flat, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older central lobes becoming rugose and blackened; lobe margins black. Medulla white. Lower surface pale ivory to pale brown, blackening near lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, brown to black. Apothecia sessile, to 7 mm wide; disc becoming flat, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple involute, becoming undulating. Ascospores 9–10 × 6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid, connorstictic acid, ±salazinic acid, ±constipatic acid and ±protoconstipatic acid.
     
  Relatively common, on rock or dead wood in drier areas of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on the South Is. of New Zealand (Canterbury, Otago).
