| Thallus small-foliose, becoming almost subcrustose towards centre, adnate to tightly adnate, ±forming small rosettes, to 3–6 cm wide. Lobes contiguous to imbricate, subirregular, irregularly branched, 0.7–2 mm wide; marginal lobes flat; apices ±rotund. Upper surface greenish yellow, darkening, flat to slightly convex, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older lobes irregularly or transversely fractured and areolae commonly formed. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, tan to brown; rhizines sparse, simple, short, c. 0.1 mm long, pale brown. Apothecia subpedicellate, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, narrow, ±crenulate. Ascospores 7–9 × 3.5–5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bacilliform to sub-bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid, diffractaic acid (major), salazinic acid (minor), consalazinic acid (trace), barbatic acid (trace), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (trace), norstictic acid (trace), protocetraric acid (trace), constipatic acid (trace) and protoconstipatic acid (trace). | ||
