Thallus foliose, adnate, to 5–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 1–2 (–3) mm wide; occasionally narrower laciniae overlie thallus centre. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening, flat to slightly concave, shiny at least near apices, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe margins often blackened, particularly towards apices; isidia dense, simple, cylindrical, occasionally becoming sparingly branched; isidia apices syncorticate and intact. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, dull, smooth, black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, slender, 0.3–0.5 mm long, black. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, diffractaic acid (major) and barbatic acid (trace), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (trace) and 3-a-hydroxybarbatic acid (trace). | ||
