| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 6–10 cm wide. Lobes densely imbricate, flat, sublinear, subdichotomously branched, 1–2.5 (–5) mm wide; laciniae imbricate and entangled, sometimes overgrowing marginal lobes, to 1 mm wide; apices crenulate, ±round. Upper surface yellow green, sometimes becoming deep olive-green or blackening, shiny, emaculate, becoming rugose and cracked, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins often black, particularly towards apices. Medulla white. Lower surface pale ivory to brown; rhizines moderately dense, simple, slender, yellow-brown to brown. Apothecia sessile or shortly pedicellate, 2–7 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple involute, becoming undulating and developing irregular cracks. Ascospores 8.5–12 × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia numerous. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, dehydroconstipatic acid (trace), pertusaric acid (trace), constipatic acid (trace), protoconstipatic acid (trace) and an unidentified fatty acid (minor). | ||
| Rare, on exposed alpine and subalpine rock in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on the South Is. of New Zealand (Mackenzie Country). | ||
