Thallus small-foliose becoming almost subcrustose in centre, very tightly adnate, ±forming small rosettes, to 3–6 cm wide. Lobes contiguous or ±radiating at periphery, not imbricate, flat, sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 0.3–0.6 (–0.8) mm wide. Upper surface greenish yellow, darkening, flat to slightly convex, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older lobes irregularly or transversely fractured; areolate in thallus centre. Medulla white. Lower surface tan to brown, often straw-yellow near lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, short, pale brown. Apothecia sessile, 0.5–1 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, narrow, ±crenulate. Ascospores 7–9 × 3.5–5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then deep red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and consalazinic acid. | ||
Widespread (but often overlooked) on rock in areas of moderate rainfall, subarid and arid areas of mainland Australia (all States and Territories); known also from Mexico and South Africa. | ||
