| Thallus small-foliose, often becoming subcrustose towards centre, very tightly adnate, to 3–6 cm wide. Lobes barely imbricate, flat, sublinear-elongate to subirregular, irregularly branched, 0.8–1.5 (–2) mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, becoming greyish black, dull or shiny towards lobe apices, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins commonly black, particularly towards apices; older lobes extensively fractured and areolae c. 1 mm wide formed. Medulla white. Lower surface tan to dark brown, often somewhat darker to smoke-grey near lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, brown. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, 1–2 (–4) mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple thin, entire, smooth. Ascospores 7–8 × 3.5–4.5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, protoconstipatic acid, constipatic acid, dehydroconstipatic acid and pertusaric acid. | ||
| Widely distributed but rarely common, on rock in drier areas of southern and central Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T. and Tas.); also on the South Is. of New Zealand (central Otago), U.S.A. (Arizona) and Mexico. | ||
