| Thallus small-foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 6 cm wide. Lobes contiguous throughout, sublinear, irregularly branched, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; apices round. Upper surface pale yellowish green, weakly convex, slightly shiny, sparsely maculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe margins brownish black; isidia dense, cylindrical, coralloid, small and simple near margins, becoming taller (to 2 mm) and branched towards centre, ±forming a mat; isidia apices syncorticate and intact. Medulla white. Lower surface mostly black, partly dark brown; rhizines produced right to margins of lobes, sparse, simple, black. Apothecia rare, sessile or subpedicellate, to 8 mm wide; disc flat then undulating, red-brown to black-brown; thalline exciple thin, crenate, isidiate. Ascospores 7–9 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ brick-red; containing usnic acid, stictic acid, constictic acid, norstictic acid (trace) and cryptostictic acid (trace). | ||
