| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, forming rosettes to 2–6 cm wide. Lobes often imbricate, ±separated near thallus margin, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.7–2 (–3) mm wide; lacking lobules. Upper surface pale yellow, convex, dull, distinctly maculate, smooth, neither isidiate or sorediate; lobe margins not black, often blackish brown near apices. Medulla white. Lower surface partly canaliculate, pale yellow to chestnut-brown; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple or rarely sparsely branched, 1–2 mm long, black. Apothecia very rare, subpedicellate, 0.8–1.5 mm wide; disc weakly concave, brown-black; thalline exciple smooth, thick, persistent, involute, ±undulating. Ascospores 5.5–7 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid, ±salazinic acid (trace) and ±hyposalazinic acid (trace). | ||
