Thallus foliose, adnate, to 3–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, ±concave, not ascending, irregular, irregularly branched, 0.7–1.5 mm wide; lobules subterete to terete, branched, ascending, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, often blackened at apices. Upper surface bright to pale yellow, often whitish yellow pruinose at lobe apices, dull, emaculate, ±rugulose, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface canaliculate or not, black, becoming brown to yellow near apices of marginal lobes; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, slender, 0.2–0.4 mm long, black. Apothecia very rare, subpedicellate, to 2.5 mm wide; disc flat to slightly concave, dark brown; thalline exciple thick, prominent, crenulate, becoming incised. Ascospores 10–11 × 5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, KC-, P+ intense yellow; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid, consalazinic acid and ±norstictic acid (trace). | ||
Uncommon, endemic, on soil in mallee scrub and arid shrubland in drier inland areas of W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic. | ||
