| Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 3–5 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, sublinear-elongate, irregularly to subdichotomously branched, 0.5–1.5 (–2) mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, flat, shiny, emaculate, often with transverse cracks, soon developing numerous isidia; lobe margins black; isidia globose, coarse, short, appearing granulose; isidia apices epicorticate, erumpent into pustulate or coarsely subsorediate masses. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 1–3 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth. Ascospores 6–9 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid, connorstictic acid, ±hypostictic acid (trace), ±hyposalazinic acid (trace) and ±constipatic acid (trace). | ||
| Rare, confined to smooth, very moist rock surfaces in mountain areas of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on both main islands of New Zealand. | ||
