Thallus foliose, adnate, to 4–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, subirregular, irregularly branched, 1.5–3 (–5) mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, emaculate, sometimes rugulose, without soredia; lobes commonly black-margined near apices; isidia moderately dense to dense, warty, becoming cylindrical, simple or branched, becoming coralloid, to 0.2 mm high; isidia apices ±inflated, epicorticate, rarely erumpent, commonly dark to blackened. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to dark brown; rhizines moderately dense, slender, simple, concolorous. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 1–3 mm wide; disc concave, distorted, shiny, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, entire, shiny, rather thick, involute, isidiate. Ascospores 7–11 × 4–5.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, scabrosin 4,4'-diacetate, scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-butyrate, scabrosin 4,4'-dibutyrate and scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-hexanoate. | ||
Uncommon, endemic, on rock in coastal, upland and arid areas of southern, central and eastern Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait)). | ||
