| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 4–7 cm wide. Lobes moderately imbricate, flat, linear-elongate, dichotomously branched, not constricted, 0.5–1 (–1.5) mm wide; apices often becoming suberect, exposing lower surface. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening with age, shiny becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, lacking isidia and soredia; lobes with conspicuous black margins. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, rugose, jet black; rhizines absent or very sparse, simple, robust, black. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid, cryptostictic acid (trace) and ±norstictic acid. | ||
