Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 7–12 cm wide. Lobes rarely imbricate, ±flat, irregular to linear-elongate, subdichotomously or irregularly branched, subascending or not, 1.5–4 (–5) mm wide, lacking lobules; margins broadly sinuate. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, becoming dull and darkening, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins commonly black. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to dark blackish brown; rhizines very dense, fasciculate to simple or often dichotomously branched, dark brown. Apothecia subpedicellate, 8–12 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flattened or slightly convex, dark brown; thalline exciple entire, undulating. Ascospores 8–10 × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid, ±salazinic acid and ±consalazinic acid. | ||
Very common and variable, grows on rock and spreads from rock onto soil, found in tableland and mountain areas of southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also on both islands of New Zealand (in particular Canterbury, Otago). | ||
