Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 15 cm wide. Lobes densely imbricate, very variable, flat, sublinear, subirregularly branched, 2–5 mm wide; often with masses of sublinear-elongate, subdichotomously branched laciniae (1–2 mm wide) building up thallus into a thick mat; margins usually slightly thickened; apices smoothly rounded or shallowly incised. Upper surface yellow-green, blackening in older lobes, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins brown or black. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, jet black, brown at lobe apices; rhizines sparse, simple, robust, black. Apothecia common, subpedicellate, to 15 mm wide; disc deeply concave to almost flat, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, shiny, involute at first, entire or crenulate. Ascospores 10–11 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange then orange-red; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid, consalazinic acid, rarely protocetraric acid (trace) and rarely norstictic acid (trace).

One of the most common species of Xanthoparmelia on rock and rarely spreading onto soil throughout the more temperate areas of Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.), also occasionally found in more arid areas and on Lord Howe Is.; also on both islands of New Zealand, in North America (U.S.A.), Central America, Kenya and South Africa.
