Thallus foliose, adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, sublinear-elongate, irregular, irregularly branched, 2–4 mm wide; margins incised, slightly thickened. Upper surface yellow-green, often blackened towards centre, emaculate, coriaceous, smooth, conspicuously rugose and irregularly cracked in older parts, lacking soredia; lobe margins black; isidia laminal, rarely at lobe apices, cylindrical becoming coralloid-branched, slender; isidia apices syncorticate and brownish. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-; containing usnic acid, ±loxodin, norlobaridone, ±conorlobaridone, ±scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-butyrate, ±scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-hexanoate and ±scabrosin 4,4'-dibutyrate. | ||
Occurs on rock in moist forests in eastern and southern Australia (Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); rather rare except in north Qld. Also in Lord Howe Is. and on both main islands of New Zealand. | ||
