| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 15 cm wide. Lobes at margin imbricate, free, sublinear, irregularly branched, 1.5–3 mm wide; laciniae growing out from lobules on margins of older lobes, flat to convolute, irregularly branched, to 1.5 mm wide; apices crenulate. Upper surface pale yellow-green, convex, dull, sometimes slightly maculate, smooth at marginal lobes, older portions becoming rugulose and cracked, ±pruinose near lobe apices, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface flat or weakly canaliculate, black to brown-black, brown in a broad zone near apices; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple, concolorous. Apothecia very rare, sessile, to 4 mm wide; disc concave, black-brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, involute, undulating. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–6.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow then orange; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and ±consalazinic acid. | ||
