| Thallus foliose, adnate, to 3–4 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, irregular, irregularly branched, 1–2 (–3) mm wide; occasionally with narrower laciniae overlying thallus centre. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening with age, flat to slightly concave, shiny near apices, emaculate, rugulose, without soredia; lobe margins often blackened, particularly towards apices; isidia forming a dense mat in thallus centre, cylindrical, simple then coralloid-branched; isidia apices syncorticate and intact. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, shiny, rugulose, black, brown at apices; rhizines moderately dense, slender, simple or occasionally tufted and branched, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ yellow, P-; containing usnic acid, barbatic acid, 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid and 3-a-hydroxybarbatic acid (trace). | ||
