Thallus small-foliose to subcrustose, very tightly adnate, to 2–4 cm wide. Lobes barely imbricate, ±contiguous, irregular to sublinear, subdichotomously branched, 0.5–0.8 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green to yellow-brown, darkening to deep olive-brown or blackish in older lobes near thallus centre, flat, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; becoming cracked, often forming convex areolae c. 0.5 mm wide in thallus centre. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, 0.2–0.3 mm long, black. Apothecia markedly innate, becoming sessile, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; disc weakly concave, brown to black; thalline exciple continuous. Ascospores 9–11 × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bacilliform to sub-bifusiform, 7–9 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K + yellow, C-, P+ yellow; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid (minor), cryptostictic acid (trace), norstictic acid (trace), ±hypoconstictic acid (trace) and ±hypostictic acid (trace). | ||
Scattered on rock from alpine to subarid areas (W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also in South Africa and on the South Is. of New Zealand (central Otago). | ||
