Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate or becoming pulvinate, to 3–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or entangled, flat to slightly convex, short and rounded, 1.5–3 mm wide, without laciniae. Upper surface dark olive-brown to brown-black or grey-black, noticeably paler and more yellow-brown on lobe ends, smooth and shiny at lobe apices, becoming dull, pitted and rugose to strongly rugose towards thallus centre, without isidia. Lower surface dull, smooth, brown-black to black, sometimes paler at lobe ends; rhizines moderately dense, simple, to 0.7 mm long, black. Apothecia common, sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown to brown-black; thalline exciple entire. Ascospores 8–11.5 × 5.5–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia weakly bifusiform, often unequally so, 5.5–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose or reddish, P-, UV-; containing 4-O-methylolivetoric acid (major), ±olivetoric acid (trace), ±microphyllinic acid (trace) and ±scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-butyrate. | ||
Apparently rare in W.A. and S.A.; also occurs in New Zealand. Grows on rock. | ||
