Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 3–12 cm wide. Lobes imbricate to loosely entangled, flat, sublinear to linear-elongate, 0.5–3 mm wide, without laciniae, rarely developing small lobules. Upper surface yellowish brown or reddish brown to dark brown, dull to slightly shiny, smooth to weakly rugulose, without isidia. Lower surface dull, slightly rugulose, black; rhizines moderately dense, simple or fasciculate, c. 1 mm long, black. Apothecia common, sessile, 2–8 mm wide; disc deeply concave, dark reddish brown; thalline exciple thin, crenulate or lacerate. Ascospores 8–10 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C- or C+ rose, KC+ rose-red, P-, UV+ strong blue-white; containing alectoronic acid, ±a-collatolic acid and rarely accessory gyrophoric acid. | ||
A common and widespread species in southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait)); also occurs in southern Europe, Morocco, South Africa, southern South America, Macquarie Is. and New Zealand. Grows on rock or on soil. | ||
