| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 3–11 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, sublinear to linear-elongate, 0.5–3 mm wide, becoming laciniate; lobes and laciniae flat to weakly convex; laciniae becoming entangled, pulvinate and loosely attached, rarely developing ±upright, subfruticose branches. Upper surface yellowish brown to olive- or dark brown, shiny, smooth to weakly rugose, sometimes becoming rugulose, without isidia. Lower surface dark brown to black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, to 1.5 mm long, black. Apothecia common, sessile or shortly pedicellate, to 10 mm wide; disc flat to deeply concave, cinnamon-brown to dark reddish brown; thalline exciple entire, crenulate or deeply incised. Ascospores 7–12 × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5.5–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C- or C+ very pale yellow, KC+ rose-red, P-, UV-; containing physodic acid (major), 4-O-methylphysodic acid (trace) and unidentified substances. | ||
| Scattered in southern and eastern Australia (W.A., N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.); also occurs in southern Africa, temperate South America and New Zealand. Grows on rock or on soi. | ||
