Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 2–8 cm wide. Lobes discrete to more often contiguous or subimbricate, flat to weakly convex, sublinear to irregular, 0.5–3 mm wide, rarely developing upright subfruticose branches. Upper surface olive-brown to dark brown, dull throughout or slightly shiny at lobe apices, smooth, becoming rugose in centre, without isidia. Lower surface pale tan to pale brown; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple, to 0.5 mm long, pale tan to brown. Apothecia common, shortly pedicellate, to 5 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flat or sometimes convex, dark reddish brown to almost black; thalline exciple thick, prominent, entire, crenulate. Ascospores 8–10 × 5–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia weakly bifusiform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-; containing divaricatic acid or stenosporic acid or both acids. Reported (Esslinger, 1977) to contain accessory gyrophoric acid (C+ rose, KC+ rose), but this has not been observed in Australian collections. | ||
Scattered in southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also occurs in southern Europe, northern and southern Africa, and New Zealand. Grows on rock or on soil. | ||
