Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate, to 2–7 cm wide. Lobes contiguous to imbricate, flat, irregular to sublinear, 1–3 mm wide. Upper surface yellowish to reddish brown or dark brown, paler at lobe apices, dull throughout or shiny and pruinose at lobe apices, smooth to strongly pitted at lobe apices, smooth to weakly rugose centrally; isidia sparse to dense, cylindrical, simple or becoming densely branched, 0.2–1 mm tall, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface dull, smooth, black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, to 0.4 mm long, black. Apothecia uncommon, sessile, to 5.5 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown to brown-black; thalline exciple becoming isidiate. Ascospores 8–12.5 × 4.5–6 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose-red, P-, UV+ blue-white; containing alectoronic and a-collatolic acids. | ||
Common in S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; occurring on rock in exposed situations, and, rarely, on logs. Also occurs in New Zealand and southern Africa. | ||
