| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 2–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate to entangled, flat, irregular to sublinear, 0.5–2 mm wide. Upper surface yellowish brown to dark brown, dull or slightly shiny and lightly pruinose at lobe apices, smooth or partially weakly pitted and rugose; isidia moderately dense to dense, cylindrical, simple or becoming branched, to 1 mm tall, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, to 0.4 mm long, black. Apothecia uncommon, sessile to shortly pedicellate, to 2 mm wide; disc concave to flat, light brown to dark brown; thalline exciple entire or sparsely isidiate. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal,8–9 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-; containing divaricatic acid (major) and ±stenosporic acid (trace). | ||
| Common in southern and eastern Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., N.S.W., Norfolk Is., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); also occurs in New Zealand and southern Africa. Grows on rock or on soil, rarely on wood. | ||
