Thallus foliose,adnate to tightly adnate, to 4–7 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, sublinear-elongate, subirregularly branched, 1–2 mm wide. Upper surface grey to dark grey and blackening, mostly flat, becoming dull, smooth developing transverse cracks, becoming rugose and occasionally areolate, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins often blackening near apices; lobe apices very shiny. Lower surface black to margins; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown to almost black; thalline exciple smooth, entire. Ascospores 6–8 × 3.5–4.5 µm. Pycnidia numerous, immersed. Conidia 5–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose or rose-red, P-; containing atranorin, 4-O-methylolivetoric acid and ±olivetoric acid. | ||
