| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate, to 8 cm wide. Lobes highly imbricate, sublinear to irregular, irregularly branched, 1–2 mm wide; laciniae rarely developing, central, 0.4–1 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface grey to dark grey, blackening, mostly flat, shiny, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe margins often blackening; lobe apices slightly brownish; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, cylindrical, slender, becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface smooth, black, sometimes brown at lobe margins; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ pale yellow-brown, C-, P+ brick red; containing atranorin, fumarprotocetraric acid (major), succinprotocetraric acid (trace), protocetraric acid (trace) and ursolic acid. | ||
