| Thallus subcrustose, tightly adnate throughout, to 1–2 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, linear-elongate, subirregularly to subdichotomously branched, 0.2–0.8 (–1) mm wide. Upper surface pale grey, blackening, almost flat to weakly convex, dull in thallus centre, shiny and commonly black-margined towards lobe apices, ±smooth at periphery, becoming fissured, transversely cracked, rugose and eventually areolate towards thallus centre, emaculate, without soredia; isidia sparsely cylindrical, simple, less than 0.2 mm tall; isidia apices often black-tipped, syncorticate, intact. Lower surface black, sometimes brown towards lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, occasionally projecting beyond margins and the margins appearing spuriously ciliate, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, lecanoric acid (major) and orsellinic acid (trace). | ||
