| Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 4–8 cm wide. Lobes scarcely to markedly imbricate, flat, subirregular to sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 1–5 mm wide; apices subrotund or crenate. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, darkening, sometimes becoming black-margined towards lobe apices, flat, shiny, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older lobes dull, often transversely or irregularly cracked, becoming rugulose. Lower surface rugose, black, brown at lobe margins; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, grouped subapically, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 2–6 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, persistent, thick and involute becoming thin and undulate. Ascospores 10–11 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia minute, immersed, punctiform. Conidia 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ yellow-orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor), ±constipatic acid and ±protoconstipatic acid. | ||
