Thallus small-foliose, subcrustose in centre, tightly adnate, to 1–3 cm wide, coalescing into larger patches. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.2–0.8 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey, darkening to brownish olive-grey at thallus centre, shiny and black-margined towards lobe apices, dull in thallus centre, emaculate, smooth at periphery, becoming fissured and rugose and eventually areolate in thallus centre, lacking soredia and isidia. Lower surface black, brown at lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 0.3–0.6 mm wide; disc ±flat, dark brown; thalline exciple entire. Ascospores 11–13 × 7–10 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC- P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, colensoic acid (minor), stenosporonicacid (major) and divaronic acid (trace). | ||
A common species in hinterland areas of southern and eastern Australia (W.A., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait)); also occurs in South Africa. | ||
