| Thallus foliose, moderately adnate to adnate, to 4–6 cm wide. Lobes crowded and imbricate in centre, subirregular to sublinear, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; often developing laciniae in centre, linear-elongate, subdichotomously branched, 0.2–1 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, flat, dull, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobes often black-margined; lobe apices shiny, ±brown; isidia sparse to dense, cylindrical, slender, simple or becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface black; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile, 2–8 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple rugulose, densely isidiate, thick and involute, becoming thinner. Ascospores 7–10 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ intense yellow; containing atranorin, salazinic acid (major), consalazinic acid (minor) and ±protocetraric acid (trace). | ||
