| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate, to 10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, sublinear to irregular, irregularly branched, 1–3 (–4) mm wide; laciniae rare, developing in thallus centre, 0.4–1 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface grey to dark grey, blackening, mostly flat, dull, emaculate, smooth, developing transverse cracks and becoming rugose, without soredia; lobe margins often blackening; lobe apices shiny, slightly brown; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, cylindrical, slender, becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface rugulose, black, sometimes brown at lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, to 5 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, pale brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, involute becoming undulate, isidiate. Ascospores 8–9 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor) and ±constipatic acid. | ||
