Thallus foliose, moderately adnate to adnate, to 4–8 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, subirregular to sublinear, subirregularly to subdichotomously branched, 1–2.5 mm wide, ±suberect at apices. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, mostly flat, shiny, emaculate, smooth but developing transverse cracks, becoming rugulose, without soredia; lobe margins often blackening near apices; isidia dense, cylindrical, simple or branched and becoming coralloid, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface black to margins; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia subpedicellate, 1–1.5 mm wide; disc concave, chestnut-brown; thalline exciple smooth, isidiate. Ascospores 7–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then pale red, C-, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, hypostictic acid (major), hyposalazinic acid (minor) and hypoconstictic acid (minor). | ||
