| Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, forming irregular patches to 10 cm wide. Lobes crowded and imbricate, flat, irregular to sublinear, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale ash grey, flat, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth but developing transverse cracks, becoming rugose and occasionally areolate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe apices shiny, black-margined. Lower surface black, brown-black at lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, robust, simple, tufted or not, to 0.5 mm long, black. Apothecia sessile, to 5 mm wide; disc concave becoming ±flat or undulate, dark brown; thalline exciple thin, involute, becoming undulate. Ascospores spuriously monoseptate (containing oil droplets), 8–9 × 3.5–4.5 µm. Pycnidia minute, immersed, punctiform. Conidia 5.5–6.5 × 1–1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ pale yellow-brown, C-, P+ brick red; containing atranorin, fumarprotocetraric acid (major), succinprotocetraric acid (trace) and protocetraric acid (trace). | ||
