Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 3–4 cm wide. Lobes rarely becoming imbricate, irregular, irregularly branched, 1–2 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey to ash grey, blackening at lobe apices, convex, dull, emaculate, smooth but becoming cracked towards thallus centre, without soredia and isidia. Lower surface pale brown, becoming dark brown to black-brown at lobe apices; rhizines sparse or scattered, simple, concolorous. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, salazinic acid (major) and consalazinic acid (minor). | ||
A scattered endemic species in inland and hinterland localities (S.A., Qld, N.S.W. and A.C.T.). | ||
