Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 6–7 cm wide. Lobes loosely imbricate, linear-elongate, with irregular di- or trichotomous branching, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; sinuses rounded; margins thickened; apices subascending, incised. Upper surface grey to dark grey, becoming dark brown or blackening, ±flat to slightly concave, shiny, emaculate, becoming ridged or weakly faveolate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins shiny, black or brown. Lower surface shiny, rugulose, jet black; rhizines sparse, grouped subapically, simple, often tufted, robust, black. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, to 4 mm wide; disc shallowly concave, becoming undulate-distorted, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thin, slightly involute at first, persistent. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–5.5 µm. Pycnidia rare, immersed. Conidia 4–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ yellow-orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major) and connorstictic acid (minor). | ||
A rare endemic species, occurring in montane heath in two widely separated localities (W.A. and N.S.W.). | ||
