Thallus small-foliose, tightly adnate, to 4–7 cm wide. Lobes scarcely imbricate, irregular to sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 0.4–1 mm wide. Upper surface grey to dark grey, blackening, mostly flat, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, developing transverse cracks, becoming rugose and eventually areolate, without soredia; lobe margins often blackening; lobe apices shiny, pale brown; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, cylindrical, slender, becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface smooth, shiny, jet black, sometimes brown towards lobe margins; rhizines moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (trace), hypostictic acid (trace) and hyposalazinic acid (trace). | ||
A common endemic species in coastal and hinterland areas in the subtropics and tropics of eastern Australia (Qld and northern N.S.W.). | ||
