| Thallus small-foliose, tightly adnate, to 5 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, crowded, irregular, subdichotomously branched, 1–2 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey, flat, shiny towards lobe apices, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe margins blackened at apices; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, globose then elongating, inflated especially near base, moderately branched, rarely becoming coralloid, to 2 mm tall; isidia apices brown-black, syncorticate, intact. Lower surface shiny, smooth, black-brown to black, chocolate-brown at lobe apices; rhizines very sparse, simple, tufted or not, robust, concolorous or darkening. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ pale yellow-brown, C-, P+ red-orange; containing atranorin and protocetraric acid (major). | ||
