Strigula fossulicola P.M.McCarthy, Streimann & Elix

  Lichenologist 28: 240 (1996). T: Lord Howe Island, summit plateau of Mt Gower, 31°35'12"S, 159°04'38"E, alt. c. 820 m, on leaves of shrubs in cloud-forest, 11 Feb. 1995, H.Streimann; holo: CANB.

Thallus crustose, foliicolous, subcuticular, determinate, continuous, non-lobate or with shallow, rounded lobes, usually mottled white, pale grey and pale green, smooth to minutely uneven, dull to slightly glossy, up to 5 mm wide, 20–50 (–70) µm thick, ecorticate; margin concolorous. Algae Cephaleuros; cells irregularly oblong, 8–16 × 5–8 µm. Prothallus not apparent. Perithecia very numerous, almost entirely immersed, solitary, paired or in groups of three. Involucrellum apical to dimidiate, convex, jet-black and glossy when exposed, often appearing dark grey when partly overgrown by the thallus, 0.25–0.4 (–0.5) mm diam., 25–50 µm thick; surface frequently uneven; transition with thallus usually not abrupt. Ostiole inconspicuous. Excipulum hyaline at the base and lower sides, medium to dark brown towards the apex, c. 10 µm thick. Centrum depressed-globose, 0.2–0.35 mm diam. Subhymenium c. 10 µm thick. Paraphyses simple to sparingly branched, 1–2 µm thick. Periphyses absent. Asci fissitunicate, clavate, 28–35 × 5.5–7 µm; lateral walls c. 1 µm thick; apex rounded; ocular chamber minute, tubercular, only visible when immature; lateral walls and apex IKI-; ascoplasma IKI+red-brown. Ascospores 8 per ascus, hyaline, elongate-ellipsoid to elongate-fusiform, 1-septate, 8–10 × 2–2.5 µm; spore halves separate at the septum early in their ontogeny, 16 per ascus, irregularly massed, 4–5 (–6) × 2–2.5 µm; contents usually 1–2-guttulate. Conidiomata of two types: (1) 60–100 µm diam., immersed, glossy black above, pale to dark brown below, with a simple conidiogenous layer and elongate-fusiform, 2–3 × 0.5 µm microconidia; (2) 80–120 µm diam., immersed, glossy black above, colourless to brown below, producing macroconidia. Macroconidia ellipsoid, (2–) 2.5–4 × 1.5–2 µm, simple, biguttulate, often appearing 1-septate due to a median concentration of cytoplasmic material, bounded by a very thin gelatinous sheath; apices occasionally with what appear to be c. 1 µm long gelatinous appendages.

Grows on the leaves of shrubs in low cloud-forest on the summit plateau of Mt Gower, Lord Howe Is.; also in New Zealand.
