| Thallus loosely appressed to the substratum, felty-byssoid, not flaking off, to 7 cm wide, dull, greenish grey to greyish orange, to 150 µm thick, with numerous calcium oxalate crystals in the photobiont layer; hyphae 1–3 µm wide. Hypothallus below the entire thallus, byssoid, brownish to greenish black; hyphae 4–5 µm wide. Prothallus to 1 mm wide, byssoid, composed of interwoven and radiating hyphae, whitish to pale greenish or partly greenish orange. Pseudoisidia numerous, cylindrical, rarely globose, unbranched, byssoid, with many projecting hyphae, concolorous with the thallus or more strongly pigmented, to 0.6 mm long and wide. Photobiont cells solitary or aggregated, 8–13 × 5–12 µm. Asci and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and prothallus C–, K+ yellow → red (forming red crystals), P+ orange, I– and K/I–; containing norstictic acid (major), aspicilin (major or minor), connorstictic acid (trace). The partially pale orange colour is an artefact caused by the hydrolysis and oxidation of norstictic acid. |
