Thallus squamulose, 3–5 cm wide. Squamules 0.4–1.3 mm wide, usually ascending, geotropically orientated, concave or plane when young, later weakly or strongly convex, green to grey-green or brown, glossy; margin slightly upturned or not, white or paler than the upper surface. Soredia farinose to granular, grey, forming marginal labriform soralia; isidia absent. Upper cortex 100–130 μm thick, composed of thick-walled hyphae. Apothecia uncommon, 0.8–1.3 mm wide, marginal or on the underside of ascending squamules, ±plane when young, soon becoming convex; disc reddish to dark brown, convex, epruinose, egyrose; margin ±prominent when young, entire, becoming excluded.
